 Located in Khandwa district, about 3 hours by road from Indore, Omkareshwar is one of the most revered religious places associated with Lord Shiva.  Located on an island at the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers, the island is connected to the mainland by a high bridge.

 The city of Maheshwar is famous for its forts and temples and sarees made by the indigenous weaving community.

 These silk sarees of Maheshwar pattern are affectionately called as Maheshwari.  It takes around 4 hours to reach Maheshwar from Indore by bus.

History of Indore District

 The old (ancient) name of Indore district was Inderpur, then it was named Indoor. Indore is the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh. Indore served as the summer capital of central India from 1948 to 1956. It was the capital of the Holkar dynasty. It was the place of central importance of Malwa.

 It was a trading center between the South (Deccan) and Delhi in the 16th century. The zamindars made Indore a permanent trading center in 1715 along the valley route of the Narmada river. On 17 May 1724, after Indore joined the Maratha Empire, the Maratha region was completely under Maratha control.

 Bajirao Peshwa took possession of the south-west part of Malwa in 1733 and gave Indore to Malharrao Holkar as a reward. After that Malharrao Holkar established the Holkar dynasty in the south-west part of Malwa and declared Indore as the capital.

After the death of Malharrao Holkar, two other incompetent rulers ruled. After that, the third ruler Ahilyabai (1737-1795 AD) took the throne. Goddess Ahilyabai Holkar made Maheshwar the new capital of the state in 1767.

 In the battle of January 1818, the Holkars were defeated by the British and the Holkar Empire came under the British and the capital was moved from Maheshwar to Indore.

 After the formation of Central India, Indore was made the capital. After the formation of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 1956, the capital was shifted to Bhopal.

 (Rajwada Palace)

 The Rajavada Palace is a 918 ft tall and 232 ft wide building with an entrance gate height of 6.70 m, similar to a Hindu style palace. Inside the Rajwada Palace was the court of the Holkars called Ganesh Hall which is built in French style, this was the haveli of the Holkar dynasty, which was built about 200 years ago.

 The architecture of Rajwada Mahal is a mixture of many forms and styles of French, Maratha and Mughal styles. It has burnt thrice in its history. In which there was a fire last in 1984, due to which it has suffered the most damage, today only the outer part remains the same.

 Annapurna Temple
 This temple, which is more than 100 feet in height, was built in the 9th century from India and a mixture of Aryan and Dravidian architectural styles. This temple is dedicated to Annapurna Devi who is considered the goddess of food. It is inspired by the world famous Meenakshi temple of Madurai. The idol of four big elephants is furnished by this temple.


 Indreshwar Mahadev Temple –

 This is the oldest temple of the city of Indreshwar Mahadev. It is said to be four thousand five hundred years old. It is located behind Pandharinath police station. The mention of this temple is also found in Shiva Mahapuran. The city was named Indoor after the name of this temple and later its name was changed to Indore.

 Pandharinath Temple is the temple of Lord Vitthal (Vishnu) –
 This temple was built by Maharaja Malharrao Holkar II between 1811 and 1833. This temple is in front of Pandharinath police station.

 It is the birthplace of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, there is a memorial dedicated to Babasaheb Ambedkar, Babasaheb was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow.

 Khajrana Temple Lord Ganesh

 This temple was built in 1735 by Maharani Ahilyabai of Holkar dynasty. According to the old tradition, devotees make three rounds of this temple and tie a thread on the wall. It is said about the statue of this temple that this statue was seen in front of Pandit Mangal Bhatt.
